In 1964, civil rights workers Michael H. Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James E. Chaney disappeared after they were released from a jail in Philadelphia, Miss.  Their bodies were found buried in an earth dam six weeks later.  (Seven men, including a chief deputy sheriff and a Ku Klux Klan leader, were convicted in 1967 of conspiracy in the killings.)
